Non-duality

The conceptual structures and non-duality wires crossed in my head tonight, leading to two observations:
  • Conceptually, duality rests on notions of separateness, dichotomy, strict categorization, and opposition. These are the conceptual structures I associate with the blue meme.
  • Non-duality -- literally, not duality -- is based on a dichotomous relationship between strict, separate, opposite categories.

This makes the concept somewhat paradoxical, and one would guess intentionally so! This is precisely the sort of language that would tend to break blue thinking from the inside: that is, using conceptual elements that are familiar to blue.

If we were to take a forward step to orange, the spectrum structure calls separateness and dichotomy into question. A further step into contextualist green calls all pre-existing categories and reference points into question.

The farther past blue thinking a train of thought is -- the less it fits nicely into sharply defined opposing categories -- the more it appears paradoxical when viewed through a blue lens. Given the association of paradox and spirituality, it's no wonder that yellow and turquoise thinking seems spiritual to some, and that non-duality is sometimes associated with turquoise.

Non-duality is a good pointer, if it is applied to disrupt thinking with a particular set of cognitive structures. It ceases to be problematic or paradoxical with further development, which may reduce its effectiveness at pointing out for people thinking with more complex conceptual structures.
