Values and American Democracy

The tragedy of American government is that it forces us to choose between sets of values. By structurally setting interests in competition, our governmental structure assures that someone loses -- and sometimes, everyone loses. It's like a photographic negative of synergy.

  1. Except that you can't make a system where no one loses. By making policy, there will always be people who don't receive what they want. Public policy is based upon values. Democracy isn't perfect, but its the closest perfect that we can consider. Representative democracy is further from that point. Its not that you're wrong, of course you're right, but its not a choice that we can avoid.

  2. When what we have is the best we can possibly consider, then we're in trouble.
